Saved from Katrina's Wrath
This young Chihuahua mix was rescued from storm ravaged Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina hit. She was brought to North Shore Animal League America as part of an unprecedented emergency airlift that helped relocate pets from make shift shelters threatened by Hurricane Rita. Upon her arrival here at the League a full medical exam revealed that this tiny dog had heartworm and would require a lengthy recuperation. The bright side of this story is that not only did we save Dixie's life, we also saved the life of her unborn puppy—you see shortly after her arrival, an ultrasound revealed that she was pregnant with one pup. We will care for and love Dixie in our foster care unit as she recovers from heartworm and gets ready to start a family. |
